Our Underwater Forests: Seagrass Meadows

Seagrasses play a vital role in the marine ecosystem.

✔️ They increase oxygen levels in the sea.
✔️ Provide habitat for about 20% of marine species.
✔️ Act as an important reserve for biodiversity.
✔️ Serve as nurseries for many commercially valuable species to spawn and grow.

During times when storms and hurricanes are becoming more frequent and intense, seagrasses reduce wave and current energy, protect the seafloor, and stabilize sediments.

In autumn, when weather conditions worsen, fallen seagrass leaves cover the surface, slowing down coastal floods and forming dense layers that prevent erosion over the years.

With their stems, leaves, and roots reaching up to 4 meters deep, seagrasses create a natural carbon sink, storing significant amounts of carbon in thick layers on the seabed.

🌱 But Seagrass Meadows Are Under Threat:

  • Climate change

  • Anchoring of boats

  • Fishing activities

Let’s protect our seagrass meadows — together, for our planet and our future. 💙
